As one of the listed programmes in the 2020 Supporting Plan for Young Curators in National Museums organised by the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism,  the permanent exhibition of Place of Origin and Field of Test - Design Art in Shenzhen (1987-2019) was organised by Guan Shanyue Art Museum of Shenzhen and is open to public from 5 February 2021 in Hall D & E in the museum.

Shenzhen is one of the birthplaces for contemporary art and design in China. Since the reform and opening-up policy was activated, Shenzhen has largely promoted the development of creative design industries and thus become an essential platform and testfield for communications with Hong Kong and Macao based on its advantangeous geographic location and pioneering perception as the 'window of the world'.

The Guan Shanyue Art Museum of Shenzhen witnessed, participated and promoted the development of art and design in Shenzhen and it is the first museum to include research and collections of the contemporary art and design into academic field. The museum has a rich collection of contemporary art and design works in which the objects not only possess huge cultural and economic value, but lay a foundation for historical tracing and research of Chinese design.

This permanent exhibition of Place of Origin and Field of Test - Design Art in Shenzhen (1987-2019) was curated by Baoyu Peng. Based on representative design works in different historical periods, the exhibition poses an in-depth tracing and research of the development of design in Shenzhen in the past 40 years. On one hand, the exhibition aims to reflect on the interactive relationship between creative design and the city's dynamism during its urbanisation and transformation. On the other hand, it hopes to celebrate local design and art, establish cultural confidence, and encourage relevant stakeholders in the industries to focus on social development and public needs while providing an example for case study of contemporary art and design in China.
